The protection ladder
Six rungs, from the cheapest layer to the most permanent. Each one is a decision, and most cards never need to climb far. Find the rung your card is on, read what it needs, and move up only when it earns it.
Rung 1: Penny sleeve
A soft first layer against dust, fingerprints and surface scuffs.
Every card you mean to keep gets one. Climb when the card is going anywhere it could bend: a box, a mailer, a pocket.

Rung 2: Toploader
A rigid shell, so the card cannot bend in a box, a binder or a pocket.
The everyday home for a card you care about. Climb when you are thinking about grading — then read your grader’s packing guidance, which is where semi-rigids come in.

Rung 5: Slab
Graded and sealed in a hard holder with a label. The card is under glass.
Sealed, graded, labelled. From here the job is protecting the holder itself: sleeves against scuffs, upright storage, no loose stacks.

For the slabs you want to see every day. Keep them out of direct sun and away from knocks; a case protects, but it is not a vault.
